I've been absolutely glued to coverage on this force of nature. The absolute destruction has been utterly frightening and awe inspiring as well. The scenes in New Orleans remind me of a movie or some eery dream but it is all too real... I close my eyes and try to imagine being there and quickly open them again, because it is just too terrible to imagine.
God. Words can't describe the devastation. Or my sincere hopes and prayers to all those involved.
What can we do to help?

I didn't get to really see the devistation until last night and sat and cried my eyes out. I can't imagine being in that situation - ever. God help them.

Katrina IS the worst case disaster those city planners hoped wouldn't happen. But now that it's been realized, we should be taking this as a serious example of what not to do after it hits.
I think it would cost the same amount, or perhaps even less, to relocate those citizens to higher ground (not that there is a "higher" ground in Louisianna) but it's not below the sea level. That was just an accident waiting to happen.

Fortunately my mother just received a phone call saying that all were same and sound. There are even a few in N.O., and I agree with Wolfie. My aunts house is gone, and I mean GONE, even a car left parked in the driveway has disappeared. We are all telling them to not even bother going back, just start over in Jackson, not so easy on them, they're old and have spent the last 50 years in that house. But like I said to my husband the other day "why would you build a city that's below sea level, why?" Of course I know the history of N.O., but really it's affects all of us in the form of insurance costs. And as stated by Jesus, as a metaphor but translating into reality, 'do you build your house upon the sand? or the rock?'.

Stop the madness of spending billions to put people right back in harm's way. If they want to live there, fine--allow them, but with the stipulation they receive no federal aid in case of future disasters. Otherwise, our money is better spent relocating them.
